For our (many!) new readers, the Grinding Wheel is an occasional series of recommendations I think you’ll benefit from. Some are aimed at making you better at building partnerships. Others I share because they broadened my perspective, made me more productive or made me smile.

If you enjoy This for That please share it with a friend or colleague.

To Read (Shorter)

  • Essays that became books - have you ever read a non-fiction book and wondered “why wasn’t that just an article”? This is a list of great essays that were turned into books. Save yourself the time. Checkout these essays.

To Read (Longer)

  • Tiny Beautiful Things, Cheryl Strayed - this collection of Dear Sugar advice columns is valuable for any human being. You’ll reflect on your own life reading the difficult, personal challenges that readers share. And Dear Sugar’s empathic voice and guidance serve as a model for how to treat people throughout your life.

To Watch

  • Power of the Dog (Netflix, movie) - things are not alway what they seem. My Oscar pick.

  • Bluey (Disney+ TV show) - I cannot say enough good things about this show, for children and adults. Episodes are just 8 minutes long, need I say more? Some of my favorite episodes: Hospital, Rug Island, Favourite Thing.

To Listen

  • Darknet Diaries Podcast (episodes Alethe) - this episode is about “social engineering” - deceiving individuals into divulging confidential or personal information used for hacking. Interesting lessons in building trust quickly. (I also highly recommend the episode called @Tennessee about the horrible lengths some people will go online to obtain a valuable alias).

Other stuff

  • Slate’s Weekly News Quiz - before I was addicted to Wordle I became addicted to trying to beat a member of Slate’s staff. Now I’m hooked on both.

Don't go straight to the top. I often tell founders/partnership folks to not go directly to the CEO/founder of "a large company" to get a deal done/some favor looked at/some account suspension appealed. Or verified 😉 Always better to go the PM/direct mgr in charge.

Overlooked advice ... even if it’s not always true.

New Opportunities

  • Lever - VP of Partnerships, Alliances & Business Development - Lever’s software helps companies recruit talent. This job description is impressive in its thoroughness about the role.

  • Impact Museums - Director of Business Development - the team that brought you the Immersive Van Gogh Experience.

  • Stripe - Strategic Partnerships Lead - Crypto / Web3 - help Stripe figure out what’s coming next.
